Galdrakraft – Soul Magic, a music review

Rarely do I find a talented author who is also a talented musician. That has occurred with Kaedrich Olsen. Kaedrich is the author of Runes for Transformation: Using Ancient Symbols to Change Your Life. He has taken some of the concepts from that book and put them into this debut Galdrakraft CD, Soul Magic. Both works are inspiring for entirely different reasons!

In the interest of full disclosure: Kaedrich is a friend of mine. We’ve known each other for several years. We first met after his book came out. I have had the pleasure of interviewing him several times on both my Pagan-Musings Podcast series and on Murphy’s Magic Mess on KZUM-HD in Lincoln, NE. Click on the show titles for the most recent interviews.

If you listen to the above linked interviews, you will learn that galdrakraft is singing the runes. You will also learn that the runes do have a thin connection to the chakra system of Hinduism and Buddhism.  With that in mind, on to the review!

Soul Magic is a collection of rune songs for prosperity, health, and general well-being. Each track on the CD serves a specific purpose. Each song is sung in runic, or old Icelandic. Kaedrich has posted some of them as videos to his YouTube channel with lyrics attached. For example, Sigrdrifa’s Prayer, based on the story of her awakening, has both the Icelandic and English lyrics in the video description:

Heill dagr – Hail Day
Heilir dags synir! – Hail Sons of Day
Heil nótt ok nipt! – Hail Night and her Daughter

Óreiðum Augum – Unwrathful eyes
lítið okkr þinig – look upon us
ok gefið sitjöndum sigr – and grant us victory

Heilir æsir! – Hail Gods
Heilar ásynjur! – Hail Goddesses
Heil sjá in fjölnýta fold – Hail to the abundant field

Mál ok mannvit – Speech and wisdom
gefið okkr mærum tveim – give to us
ok læknishendr, meðan lifum – and healing hands with life

Vigi Vé Thetta – Bless and Protect this sacred Space

I enjoy listening to this album, especially when I need to refocus my intentions on a project. Track #5, the Prosperity Galdr is a particularly useful piece.

I would not recommend listening to this CD while driving. As it is intended as an ambient meditation CD with lyrics or instructions for meditation, listening to it while driving could be hazardous to your health and the lives of those on the road with you. Listening at home, before or after bed, would be ideal. If you have a work place that allows for either headphone or speaker music, this would also be beneficial there. In a group setting, this album will bring you closer to those around you and make working together more productive.

Whether you are adept at the runes or a beginner, this album helps you to understand the deeper meaning of the runic language. As Kaedrich points out, the use of runes as a divinatory tool is a recent thing. As a language, it is ancient.
